Hyperthyroidism in pregnant women
Hyperthyroidism of any cause can complicate pregnancy, but Graves’ hyperthyroidism is the most common cause of overt hyperthyroidism. Human chorionic gonadotropin-mediated hyperthyroidism is a common cause of subclinical hyperthyroidism. It may occur transiently in the fi rst half of gestation and is typically less severe than Graves’ disease. The diagnosis of hyperthyroidism during pregnancy should be based primarily on suppressed (<0.1 mIU/L) serum thyroid-stimulating hormone level and elevated serum free and total thyroxine and triiodothyronine levels.
