Selection and mutation bias shape inversion landscapes across prokaryotic genomes
Inversions are a major source of structural genome evolution in prokaryotes. Previous studies suggest that the inversion landscape of prokaryotic genomes is not random – multiple cases of enrichment for inversions symmetrical around the origin of replication have been reported. However, (i) it remains unclear whether the reported cases are anecdotal or representative, and (ii) the underlying causes for the non-random inversion pattern are incompletely understood.
