Football Hooliganism in Croatia: A Historical and Sociological Analysis

Based on original research, this study presents results of a historical and sociological analysis of football violence in contemporary Croatia, arguing that it has been largely of a ritualized nature. Since the late 1970s, violence has been a part of the fan ritual, and verbally and physically violent encounters between fans have been principally symbolic. There have been occasions of non-ritualized violence, however, in particular in moments of tension between national groups as well as between fans groups and the state, the latter usually in the form of police forces. At the same time, Croatia’s football fan violence, and other behaviors typically associated with “football hooliganism, ” is a long-standing, medium-range social problem. To illustrate this, this study situates Croatian football hooliganism in the recent past and present of Croatian football and Croatian society, particularly as they relate to the consequences of war in the 1990s, the controversial transition process to democracy, and the ongoing social crisis among the country’s youth.
