Identification of Genital Mycoplasmas in Women by Culture and Nutrient Media

Introduction The introduction of selective media in isolating Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis made the routine diagnostics considerably easier (3, 5, 6, 8). The identification of mycoplasmas is based upon biophenotype characteristics and different kind of enzymatic activity (4, 6, 7). This paper show the routine isolation of mycoplasmas from cervical smear in the period 1984-1987. The clinical material was cultivated on solid and liquid nutrient media which first was not and afterwards was enriched with GHL (6) for the isolation of Ureaplasma urealyticum. Media were enriched with different concentrations of arginine for the isolation of Mycoplasma hominis. The interest in the isolation of mycoplasmas from the urogenital tract is increasing because under certain conditions they cause various inflammation processes and there is a possibility that they may cause problems in reproduction as well (1, 2). Materials and Methods From 1984-1986 (period I) U.urealyticum was isolated on the standard media which were not enriched with GHL, but in 1987 (period II) GHL was added to the media (0.025%). For the isolation of M.hominis concentration of arginine was increased from 0.1% to 0.2%. Results Number of positive findings is increasing by using standard, selective media in the routine isolations of genital mycoplasmas (Figure I).
