Kopački Rit's Traditional Fishery and Its Anthropological and Ethnolinguistic Characteristics
Kopačevo is a Croatian Danubian Region's wetland village in which a unique type of traditional fishery and Croato-Hungarian ethnolinguistic terminology were developed. Nowadays, due to an unnecessary ban on fishing and the related traditional activities in the late 20th century, the last generation of fishermen, who profess these skills, has almost disappeared. Simultaneously, this fishing prohibition represents a threat to the ecosystem, because, due to the plant deposits and a lack of maintenance, the meanders are progressively vanishing. Consequently, the Traditional Fishing Society seeks to protect these traditional skills as a cultural property and as a tourist potential, as well as an environmental protection and monitoring measure. Thus, the aim of this paper was to research and estimate the environmental, cultural, and economic sustainability of a possible revitalization of traditional fishing in the Kopački Rit area.
