Tourism development in the Croatian Adriatic islands
Although Croatia&#8217 ; s islands are among the country&#8217 ; s greatest assets, the full potential has not yet been tapped. For almost a century little had been invested in these areas and year-by-year they had witnessed economic and demographic decline. Unlike many insular regions in the Mediterranean, Croatian islands currently do not face serious ecological problems. Nevertheless, by paying heed to earlier lessons concerning the experience and mistakes of other regions, the Croatian government has officially chosen sustainable development as the only acceptable scenario for the island&#8217 ; s future development. In this chapter purpose is to describe the evolution of tourism on the Croatian islands and indicate the sector&#8217 ; s potential for future development. In addition, we discuss the problems these environments face, and possible policy and development strategies, which should be applied in the near future in order to enhance the value of existing resources while ensuring the long-term development prospects of the island&#8217 ; s population.
