PEM Based Micro Trigeneration System with Renewables for Isolated Households
For the better utilization and distribution of residential power and heat the hybrid energy system can become an alternative solution for stand-alone power generation based on renewable energy sources (solar and wind) with micro trigeneration (mCCHP) system. Micro-CCHP, which provides both electricity and thermal energy, fulfills residential load more effectively than conventional systems. Thermal energy rejected during the on-site production of electricity can be recovered to reach the heating loads. Micro-CCHP based on fuel cell systems are specially attractive because of their high efficiency, quiet operation and small size. The conventional system purchase electricity from the electricity network grid and produces heat with a fossil fuel-fired boiler. In this presentation the PEMFC based micro-CCHP system with hydrogen storage is compared to the conventional method of covering electrical and thermal load demands. The presentation evaluates a hybrid energy system consisting of photovoltaic array and wind turbine as renewable sources, while mCHP consisting of a fuel cell sub-system (FCS), an electric heat pump (HP), and a thermal storage tank (TS). Referent residential object is single-family household (70m2) in the Mediterranean region (Split, Croatia) with electricity consumption of 10 kWh/day, hourly peak power demand of 3.8 kW and 500 L of oil equivalent yearly heat demand. Simulations and optimal energy system identification are conducted by considering the geographical location and availability of energy sources. The results show that optimal electricity supply is technically feasible with a 100% renewable system including hydrogen technologies (electrolyser, hydrogen tank and fuel cell).
