Azithromycin and doxycycline efficacy in the treatment of female patients with acute urethral syndrome caused by Ureaplasma urealyticum with regards to the duration of clinical symptoms

The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of various antimicrobial treatment schemes in patients with urethral syndrome caused by U. urealyticum divided into groups, with regards to the duration of clinical symptoms. A total of 312 female patients with acute urethral syndrome caused by U. urealyticum were examined. The patients were divided into two groups, one group with clinical symptoms present for less than three weeks before the start of treatment, while the second group of patients manifested clinical symptoms for three weeks or longer prior to the beginning of therapy. The patients were randomised according to a computerised randomisation list. Clinical and bacteriological efficacy was evaluated 3 weeks after the end of therapy. In the group of 150 patients with disease symptoms lasting for 3 weeks or longer, the eradication rate and the clinical cure rate were significantly higher after the administration of azithromycin in a dose of 1x500 mg/ 6 days than after a single dose of 1.0 g (P<0.001), and after the administration of doxycycline dose 2x100 mg / 14 days than by using doxycycline 2x100 mg / 7 days (P<0.005).
