The role of institutions in the analysis of economic development – the case of countries in transition
Th e paper deals with the issues of defi ning the institution in the social sciences and their practical applicability in the analysis of economic phenomena and processes, particularly with regard to economic development. It explores the relationship between the institutional infrastructure and the level of economic development. In the end, the fundamental shortcomings of the institutional infrastructure of the Croatian economy are shown and desirable and possible solutions are proposed, especially the measures to encourage development of appropriate institutions for a modern market economy that should be consolidated into a coherent, the long-term development strategy that will be acceptable to all stakeholders.
