Parental practice and experience of parenthood, as two basic aspects of parenting, have been explored worldwide for the last hundred years or so and in Croatia for about forty years. Researchers began with the exploration of parental behavior and parenting styles, but a few decades later the research was broadened to include the experience of parenthood. Previously, when developmental psychology mostly meant child psychology, the parenting phenomenon was observed in the early stages of parenthood. After developmental psychology became a lifetime phenomenon, parenting was studied in all developmental stages. However, the first phase of parenting is still dominant in research. This fact is reflected in the contents of this monograph, which is a representative of Croatia‟s most important theoretical and empirical research in this area. The results of some of the research have had a significant impact on social institutions that deal with family, education, and health issues. In the last eighty years, Croatian society has been marked by turbulent events such as wars, revolutions, and several economic crises to name only a few. These events have affected the structure of the family, family relations, the philosophy of upbringing and the philosophy of parental behavior. Today, parenting is a relevant social theme studied by a number of Croatian psychologists from the academic community and private practice alike. Their research on parenting has a number of different goals. One of them is to verify the relevance of some theories and models for the explanation of parenting and its impact on different aspects of the development of children and adolescents. They have considered the changes in the theoretical approaches reflected in the social and cultural stages, as well as the progress in psychology as a science. The results of the Croatian research are compared with the findings from other cultures. In this regard, much of the research has been dedicated to the construction, adaptation and cross-validation of instruments for measuring key concepts. These concepts (e.g., dimensions of motivation in parenthood, styles of parental behavior towards children, parental competence, identity, generativity, life satisfaction and satisfaction with parenting, features and status of children and their parents, and so on) represent the independent, mediator or dependent variable. Furthermore, Croatian researchers have investigated the effects of stressful life events (such as war, unemployment, divorce and death of a parent), specific family structures and specific interpersonal relationships in the families, and their effects on the development of children and adolescents. Parents and children from Croatian regions exposed to armed conflicts were studied in various ways in order to determine the significance of war on the life of parents, their parental goals and values, and their satisfaction with the parenting role. War trauma and its effects on mental health, as well as the existential problems in the post-war period (poverty, unemployment, etc.) have influenced the development of children and their parents. Loss of parents due to illness, death, divorce, and parenting in single-parent families were studied within the social context of such parenting. In addition, the impact of these factors on family relationships and some of the developmental outcomes in children, including behavioral problems, drug addiction, school achievement, were studied as well. Because of the changes in the demographic picture, that is, a negative demographic trend, considerable attention has been paid to research on fertility motivation and the transition to parenthood. Several theses, dissertations and a number of journal articles have been published in this subject area. Adaptation to the new life role in biological and adoptive parents has also been investigated. Adjustments were operationalized in terms of the quality in the marital relationship, satisfaction with life, and satisfaction with parenting, while the sources of adjustment were operationalized in terms of stable personality traits and attitudes. Based on the results, suggestions have been given for different prevention programs in order to strengthen parental competence as a way of reducing stress in the transition to parenthood. Extensive studies have been dedicated to different constructs related to parenting as an important expression of generativity in adulthood, a subject on which comparative studies were done in two transitional countries (Croatia and Slovenia). Finally, a relatively new research area in Croatia is parenthood in later adulthood. This subject was prompted by theoretically based assumptions about the impact of significant transitions such as retirement. Special features worthy of mention with regard to the research includes the following: a) earlier research, which was conducted mainly among mothers, was recently replaced by studies that include both mothers and fathers and their joint impact on the development of children, as well as the effects of parental conflicts on the psychosocial functioning of children ; b) research on parenting and parenthood uses recent theoretical approaches to parenting, along with theory based research designs ; c) critical observations about the shortcomings of the published research are presented and future directions of research are proposed. The editors hope that the content of this monograph will have a positive reception and receive critical evaluation by the international academic community which will lead to more cross-cultural cooperation.
