Parenting in the Challenging Circumstances of Croatian Post-War Society

The purpose of this chapter is to present results of the Croatian study on the determinants of parenting. Although the chapter mainly depicts data from one study it also reviews data from other research conducted in Croatia and internationally. The study involved 812 pairs of parents from the regions of the country differently affected by the Croatian war of the independence from Yugoslavia (1991- 1995). The research was conducted by researchers from the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The theoretical foundations of the study were Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological system model (1979) and Belsky's process model of the determinants of parenting (1984). The first part reviews the mediating role of parenting in children’s coping with war and stress. The second part describes the postwar situation in Croatian society as it relates to destruction arising from the war and the economic crisis. The chapter describes the parental assessment of the impact of war on their lives, their parenting goals and values, and their parenting satisfaction and behavior. A comparison between mothers and fathers as well as between parents living in areas differently war affected by the war is presented for all the variables. Predictors of parenting behavior from the level of the child, parent, family, and egzosystem as well as the analysis of the mediation of parental depression in relationship between the war impact and parenting are presented. The implications for future research and preventive interventions against transgenerational transmission of the effects of war are discussed.
