Economic Localisation as a Driver of Sustainable Economy: the Case of Croatia
The first decades of the 21st century are characterised by an urgent need of changing of the fundamental paradigm of managing and using of resources (human, natural, material, financial). Unsustainable production and consumption are resulting in increasing social inequalities, the pollution of the ecosystem, the unsustainable exploitation of natural resources which ultimately endangers human existence. The process of globalisation, i.e. an economic process based on deregulation of trade and finance engenders those problems. The focus of this paper is on the process of economic localization as a possible way towards a more sustainable economic model. The aims of the paper are to discuss the limitations of the dominant economic concept, to discuss the process of economic localization, to analyse the transition process towards sustainable economy in Croatia and to propose the necessary changes in the Croatian economy towards a more responsible development paradigm. Many initiatives, especially at the local levels, indicate the potentials that sustainable economy in Croatia could have.
