Genotype by environment analysis of a maize line x tester experiment
The aim of this study was to estimate stability for grain yield of 64 F1 hybrids, produced by crossing 16 elite maize inbred lines to four testers, under stress and non-stress conditions. The F1 hybrids were evaluated under moderate drought stress, low N stress, and non stress conditions from 2007 to 2009 in a total of 9 environments. Total genotype by environment interaction for a set of maize hybrids generated by line x tester crossing design could be broken down into three components: line x environment effects (hence line gca x environment), tester x environment (tester gca x environment) and hybrid x environment (sca x environment). Each of the components can be represented by two-way table of means, and hence subdued to AMMI analysis. Given the different designs, missing data patterns, etc. in our data set, input data for AMMI analysis where two-way tables of effects instead of raw means. Therefore, for the analysis of this type of data, only multiplicative part – SVD was applied and used to calculate IPCA scores for a chosen set of interaction axes. The IPCA scores where then used to create biplots for the interpretation of different G x E interaction components.
