The Last Lemurian: A Late 19th-century Fairy Tale in the Australian Outback
George Henry Firth Scott’s 1898 novel The Last Lemurian: A Westralian Romance represents the most famous example of the appropriation of the popular 19th-cent. mytheme of Lemuria. The novel reflects the matrix of the early Australian science fiction and is discussed variously as an early romance, a lost race romance or, alternatively, as a Lemurian novel. The paper considers the novel's colonialist amalgam of previous British and Australian literary influences, and its typical Proppian storyline. The paper finally discusses the novel's subversion of the late 19th-cent. Australian realist canon.
