Budgeting the migrant crisis: the role of the European parliament
This paper describes and explains the budgetary process of the European Union (EU), and the role of the European Parliament, in particular. It uses the ongoing migrant crisis in Europe as a case study in order to demonstrate how resources can be appropriated through the budgetary process. It tackles the questions of: (i) how the EU can react to the threat of the migrant crisis from a financial and policy perspective and (ii) whether the EU can address the ongoing problems effectively. The findings show that in the short- term, the EU has somewhat effectively addressed the financial needs of the migrant crisis through existing and ad hoc measures ; however, major policy changes will need to take place to address the problems related to increased migration flows in the long run.
