Water quality management - monitoring of bathing water on Lake Motičnjak, Croatia

One of important purposes of water management procedures is to ensure proper water quality for various human uses. This certainly includes monitoring of a bathing water quality, so that potential pollution can be noticed in time and thus a negative impact on public health can be avoided. Until 2013, physical-chemical and microbiological parameters of bathing water quality were examined and since 2014 only microbiological analysis has been carried out, which is in line with the relevant regulation on the monitoring of the bathing water quality - Regulation on bathing water quality (OG 51/14). Recreational or bathing water quality is related to the presence of microorganisms in water such as fecal coliforms, streptococci, total coliforms and enterococci. The study area in this work is Lake Motičnjak, so-called "Varaždin Sea" located on the right bank of the Drava River near the town of Varaždin, Croatia. Although lakeshore Motičnjak is not declared as a public beach, the quality of bathing water has been systematically monitored since 2010. During bathing seasons, water samples are taken and analysed to detect the presence of two bacteria, Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci, because many studies have shown that there is a connection between fecal bacteria and human diseases. The objectives of our research were to evaluate the water quality of Lake Motičnjak in Croatia according to the results of microbiological activity. Based on the results of the conducted analyses, the bathing water on Lake Motičnjak can be rated as "water of excellent quality".
