Potential use of Lemna minor L. for the phytoremediation of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates
Linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) represent more than 40% of all surfactants used. Although LAS is considered as nonpersistant pollutant, particularly concerning is emission of untreated wastewater containing LAS into surface water. Duckweed (Lemna minor L.) was selected as model plant for evaluating the phytoremediation potential for LAS removal. The amount of LAS which was removed by Lemna minor L. after seven days was 73, 71%. Decrease in pH value (from 8, 64 to 6, 89) and COD indicated an improvement in water quality. The COD measurement results indicate low concentration of organic matter in water samples (up to 20 mg/L).At the end of experiment there was no change in the chlorophyll content in analysed tissue of treated plants compared to the control plant. The results showed that under these experimental conditions there was no effect of LAS on plants morphology. Data obtained from this preliminary study demonstrated the phytoremediation potential of Lemna minor L. for tackling the problem of environmental contamination by surfactants successfully.
