This analysis considers instances of hybridization and overlap, difference and conflict between Thomas Mann's novella "Der Tod in Venedig" and its cinematic adaptation by Luchino Visconti, "Morte a Venezia". The paper's main thesis holds that Visconti's portrayal of Tadzio casts him as more than Hermes ; the boy is Amor, and also Venus. Venus is a boy – pictorial and cinematic aspects of this reconfiguration are examined in selected scenes, drawing on the theoretical concept of the emotive image put forth by Aby Moritz Warburg.
