Biological health and social status in the early mediaeval population from Dalmatia

The archaeological site Nin – Ždrijac is located near Zadar on the Croatian Adriatic coast. The site was discovered in 1967. The excavations lasted for nearly a decade during which period a total of 337 graves have been unearthed and analysed. A total of 216 skeletons were available for anthropological analyses. This paper presents the results of anthropological analyses of health and life-quality of Early Mediaeval population buried at the Nin – Ždrijac site, within the context of social status.The assumption was made that differences in status were reflected in the manner of the burial. The criteria used to determine social status were grave architecture and quantity and quality of grave finds and goods. In order to asses the health of the individuals anthropological methods that included the assessment of age and sex, as well as the analyses of pathologies that leave traces on dry bones were used. The pathologies analysed in this paper include those that are considered to be indicators of subadult stress, dental caries and alveolar disease, as well as those that indicate hard physical labour, and frequency and distribution of trauma. The correlation between social status and biological health was analysed using the multivariate statistical method of log-linear analysis
