Wireless Access Technologies and Bearer Services Suitable for ITS Applications
Paper considere some basic issues for evaluation and selecting wireless communications systems and bearer network services suitable for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) applications. Problem is defined as a very complex technological and beyond-technological problem which can be more successfuly solved using general systems approach and functional-process oriented methodology. Generalized structural and functional description of telecommunications and transport/traffic networks is elaborated as a proper starting point in problem-solving and selecting appropriate technology. ITS Architecture have to be holistic framework that ties together the transport and telecommunication components to enable the creation and effectvie deployment of ITS services. All-IP wireless/mobile network is proposed as a more suitable (enabling) technology for several ITS applications. Alternative radio access technologies (wireless LAN, cellular networks and satellite networks) are described as access part of all IP wireless/mobile networks. Specific roles of Information Service Providers (ISP) and Application Service Providers (ASP) in ITS domain are marked.
