Investigation of bioactive compounds from Dalmatian plants: Their antioxidant, enzyme inhibition and health properties
The reactive oxygen species in living organisms can potentially alter the structure and function of several important components such as cell membranes, receptors of signaling molecules, lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, RNA and DNA. The goal of our project is to reveal the antioxidant, enzyme inhibition potential, cytotoxic activity and potential impact in cell signaling patways of biological active compounds originated from Dalmatian endemic and other plants. It could be used in prevention of oxidative stress and treatment different diseases. This is the global trends of healthy diet which leads to healthier and longer life, since in the recent decades it is well established ethnopharmacological approach in research for potentially healthier food, food supplements and drugs that originate in plants. In accordance with these trends, our main scope is the isolation and identification of biologically active compounds from insufficiently explored Dalmatian herbs with the intention to examine if these compounds posses listed biological activities.
