Corrosion Protection of Cu and Cu-10Ni With Benzotriazole
Cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were employed to study corrosion behaviour of Cu and Cu-10Ni alloy in acetate buffer solutions at various pH and various inhibitor concentrations. Depending on the pH solution both soluble and insoluble copper anodic oxidation products were present at the copper and Cu-10Ni surface and influenced inhibition efficiency. At pH 5.8 the formation of copper oxides and hydroxides was favoured relative to the production of copper ion through anodic dissolution, the predominant reaction observed at pH 4.0. The strong inhibiting effect of BTA on the kinetics of anodic charge transfer in this solution corresponded to the formation of the polymeric complex of Cu(I)BTA. At higher pH (8.9) more favourable was the production of insoluble surface oxides. The low value of inhibitor efficiency at high pH was attributed to adsorption inhibiting mechanism in the absence of Cu(I) ions. Good support for these results was obtained from the data of impedance spectroscopy.
