The removal of nitrogen substances from a chemically defined medium by the addition of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) using a mixed bacterial culture of nitrificants and denitrificants.
The results presented in this paper show the removal of nitrogen substances (ammonia as nitrogen) from a chemically defined medium with the addition of detergents (LAS) with higher concentrations than a usually present in communal wastewaters and which a consider to be inhibitors of activity of the majority of the microorganisms of activated sludge. The results show that the use of a mixed culture composed of NI/DNI can prevent the inhibitory effect of LAS and achieve its biological degradability (mineralization) simuntaneously with the process of nitrification and denitrification.
