How competent are we to teach Citizenship Education?
The aim of this research has been to study the advantages and disadvantages of implementing the Citizenship Education Curriculum in general class teaching and to analyse the presence of citizenship education in integrated primary school teaching programmes at universities in the Republic of Croatia with a two-year detachment comparative analysis. In the empirical research the students and teachers' opinion has been questioned about the most important teaching competences, pupils' educational achievements and civil competences, as well as about the obstacles in the implementation of these contents. Since a competent teacher is the guarantee for a quality teaching of Citizenship education, the importance of initial teachers' education in this field has been promoted in this paper, because the analysis has shown that in times when Citizenship education is introduced in schools as a compulsory content (intercurricular), this important area becomes/remains (or neither of them) an optional content.
