Biochemistry vs culture within emotions: a historian's perspective

The study of emotions is, without a doubt, one of the widest and most active fields of interdisciplinary research. It takes at least a dozen of disciplines, ranging from neuroscience, biochemistry and medicine to social anthropology, psychology and history (to mention just a few) to get a holistic image of the processes involved in the experience and expression of emotions. Emerging methodologies in the historical study of emotions might be of interest to natural scientists, as historians have certainly drawn on the natural and biological sciences in developing our own research approaches. This talk introduces some of the main challenges within research of emotions from a humanities perspective, including the roles of cultural regulation and filters on emotional experience. Culture has a significant impact on the way in which people experience and display emotions. It is not only the case that various cultures have different social conventions regarding different emotional patterns, but also these vary within cultures over different periods of time. Both biochemistry and culture determine individual experiences of emotions, in a constant transfusion between the two, making it extremely difficult to measure. However it is, I will suggest, possible to measure some of their component influences, and to propose a general model for the study of history of emotions.
