POPULATION DYNAMICS AND CHAMOIS (Rupicapra rupicapra) MANAGEMENT IN PAKLENICA NATIONAL PARK

Paklenica National park is situated in the South Croatian Littoral by the coast and on the territory of 95km2. Legislation does not allow any direct economic actions but management comes down to monitoring the status and population dynamics, mutual influence of individual species and the impact of visitors on game. For this reason the aim of this study was to determine how the lack of management measures is affecting the development of population of mountain goats in an environment such as a national park. Data on chamois were collected from observational ranger sheets, observation in the field, collecting feces and parts of dead chamois that have been found. Chamois has first been seen in the park in 1985, however systematic monitoring started ten years afterwards, when the park’s population has been established to amount of 30 individuals. In 2005. Year 100 – 150 individuals have been present in the park. It has been estimated that today within the park limits reside 250 individuals of chamois. They are spread over a large area from 170 all the way to 1741 a.s.l. Permanent observations are being made from seven pedestrian routes and during the last ten years 208 counts have been made. Counting showed that the highest concentrations of chamois are alongside visitor routes and in the lower part of the park. The reason for this are in the somewhat more wooded upper parts, and the occasional presence of three large carnivores (wolf, lynx, bear) in the higher parts of the park. What is to be expected in the future is that the chamois, due to the absence of culling after exceeding the capacity of parks habitat which is estimated to 400 individuals, will gradually spread to the surrounding hunting areas.
