ECONOMIC CRISIS AND RECESSION AS A CHALLENGE FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF TOURISM IN CROATIA AND IN THE EUROPEAN UNION

The subject of analysis in this paper is the impact of economic crisis and recession on the dynamics of tourist movements in Croatia and in the European Union. Dynamic growth of tourist movements at the beginning of the 21st century has been interrupted by global economic crisis which results, among other things, in the decline in productivity, employment, and GDPpc. This also causes reduction of the share of personal consumption of the population in emitive tourist countries (especially European Union Member States), allocated for tourist consumption. The most visited tourist regions in the world were faced with stagnation and negative tourist trends expressed through quantitative indicators (tourist arrivals and overnights, tourist receipts) in 2008 (and they continue to face them in 2009). This trend has been recorded in Croatia as well. Unfavourable tourist trends in tourist demand are a challenge to all tourist countries, which try to respond to market changes with anti- recession measures. Activities in tourist supply shown through improvement of quality of the tourist product, and reduction of the prices of tourist services, as well as government intervention (government incentives, reduction of taxes on inputs and outputs in tourism), are only a few of the measures by which countries attempt to achieve competitiveness and improve their position on the tourist market.
