Staphylococcus aureus nasal carriers among first-year student of medicine

Introduction Carriage of Staphylococcus aureus, especially methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) is a problem within healthcare organizations because can cause a variety of infections. It has great transmissibility, high pathogenic potential and the possibility of resistance to multiple antimicrobial agents. The aim of the study was to screen S. aureus carriage among first-year student of medicine. Materials and Methods Samples were collected from nasal fossae of first-year student of medicine. Total seventy-one swabs were collected from 32 (45%) male and 39 (55%) female participants. Swabs were cultivated on blood agar plates and the identification of microorganisms was done by Gram staining and by biochemical tests. The study was conducted in the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Microbiology and Parasitology, University of Osijek in Osijek, Croatia in 2015. Results Out of 71 processed nasal swabs from first-year student of medicine, on 13 (18.3%) nasal swabs S. aureus were detected. Out of 13 positive S. aureus, 9 (69.2%) were detected from female nasal swabs, and 4 (30.8%) from male nasal swabs. None of isolated S. aureus was methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). No statistically significant difference was between the male and female first-year student of medicine and isolated S. aureus bacteria (p> 0.05). Conclusion The data obtained from this study revealed that there were S. aureus nasal carriers among first-year student of medicine (18.3%) but there weren’t carriers of MRSA among the first-year student of medicine.
