Lavender: Supercritical CO2 extraction and process optimization by response surface methodology
Lavandula angustifolia L. is a member of Lamiaceae family. This perennial plant grows on well-drained, fertile and lime soils, best in full sun and wind protection, and is therefore characteristic for the Mediterranean region. The widespread and multifunctional use of lavender in folk medicine as a remedy for nervous disorders, food additive and moth repellent is well-known. Apart from its traditional use, it was scientifically proven that lavender and its extracts possess noteworthy biological activity, such as: antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal and antispasmodic activity. In addition, they have a beneficial effect on the respiratory, cardiovascular and digestive system. The in vitro studies determined the existence of analgesic and anesthetic activities of lavender oil. Also, it shows a preventative effect in dementia caused by the Alzheimer’s disease. One of the most valuable components present in lavender is essential oil. Its chemical profile is variable and depends on genotype, geographical location and stage of development. However, linalool and linalyl acetate represent its most dominant compounds. A great influence of three process parameters of supercritical CO2 extraction (pressure, temperature and CO2 flow rate) on extraction yield of L. angustifolia was noticed. GC-MS profiles of the extracts as well as coumarin content determined by HPLC also proved to be highly dependent on the above mentioned process parameters. Central composite experimental design was applied for optimization along with the response surface methodology. Experimentally obtained results were fitted to a second-order polynomial model and multiple regression. Adequacy of model was evaluated by analysis of variance.
