Interfacial Characteristics of the Rubber Blanket : Dampening Solution System
The dampening soluton has an important and multifunctional role in offset printing, having a significant influence on the image transfer and on the printing quality. While the behaviour of dampening solution on non-printingareas of the offset plate is rather well understood, as well as its penetration into paper and its emulgation with printing inks, the intrefatial characteristics of the rubber blanket-dampening solution system remain of great interest. Three categories (new, used, and regenerated) of the same blanked type, in contact with dampening solutions of different concentrations (1-8%) have been investigated. The solid and liquid phases were determineted by their basic characteristics (surface roughness conductivity pH value, surface tension) while the interaction at the was elaborated on the basis of contact angle measurements. Results were copared and analysed: the influences of different parameters, on the system are dicussed, with special regard to the non-polar surface and the character of the polar liquid phase. The 'air trap' model was applied to the investigated system. The results obtained, as wellas, their relations, contribute to a better undrestanding of the interfacial behaviour of the dampening solution-rubber blanket system.
