Developing Translation Competence within the Lifelong Learning Programme for Lawyer-Linguists in the Republic of Croatia
In this paper the author discusses the competences of translators necessary in the field of legal translation. In the introductory part an overview of theoretical approaches to legal translation is offered, with special reference to the functionalist approach, especially to the representatives of the Skopos theory (Reiss and Vermeer), and the translation principles developed by Kelly and Šarčević. Special attention is paid to the competences of legal translators as defined by Radegundis Stolze, a representative of the hermeneutical approach. In the main part of the paper, legal translation within the Lifelong Learning Program educating legal translators in Croatia is analyzed against the Stolze's heremeneutical typology of competences. Finally, conclusions are drawn on the teaching methodology used in education of future translators in the field of law with specific reference to Legal English and Legal German.
