Sažetak
Demonstrative identifiers are one of four type of demonstratives proposed by Diessel (1999). They occur in copular and non-verbal clauses and are used to focus the hearer’s attention on entities in the surrounding situation or in the universe of discourse. This study reviews typologies of demonstratives discussed in recent literature with respect to the status of demonstrative identifiers. Moreover, on the basis of corpus evidence it investigates the history of non-verbal constructions with demonstrative identifiers in Croatian. The main change occured in the case of the argument. In the earliest Croatian texts the argument appears in the nominative case (se človêkь). In modern Croatian demonstrative identifier is followed by the genitive case (Evo čovjeka!). Apart from shading light upon the diachronic development of non-verbal constructions with demonstrative identifiers in Croatian, the study will point how do they differ from similar constructions in other Slavic languages as well as in major European languages. In addition, they will be put in the context of other non-verbal constructions with genitive argument in Croatian.
