The students’ school workload from the perspective of students and parents

A student's burden with schoolwork was determined by the conception of the curriculum, teaching arrangements, number of subjects and textbooks, the extent of homework and evaluation. An appropriate burden of students is desirable, but the researches show a possible overload, resulting from not adjusting the demands requested from students and their evolving capacities. We focused this research on the examination of the attitudes of students and parents about the workload of students related to school subjects, textbooks and homework as one of the most important factors, and school satisfaction, success and cooperation, as well as evaluation were examined as a result of their overload. The study included N=1, 012 participants from five elementary schools (Pula, Zagreb, Osijek, Vukovar and Otok), N=538 students and N=474 parents of students. The results show that the number of subjects and textbooks significantly contributes to the phenomenon of students’ overload. Homework contributes to an even greater burden, which is reflected in the attitudes, and students’ dissatisfaction with the evaluation but also their satisfaction with the school although it overburdened them in the mentioned areas.
