Examination of the Low-Temperature Heat Release occurrence in SI Engine
Due to the requirements for reduction of CO2 emission (fuel consumption) and meeting the limit values for pollutant emissions, the objective in IC engine is to keep the engine operating point at high load. On the other hand, because of the high load and high charging pressure the tendency of engine to knock occurrence increases. During some preliminary tests performed with an experimental single cylinder engine, strong tendency to knock occurrence was observed, but was preceded by the appearance of low-temperature heat release in the bulk charge even before the spark discharge. The tests were performed on a diesel Engine Hatz 1D81Z that is converted to SI operation with compression ratio 12. In order to further study the low-temperature heat release occurrence and its influence on knock, the tests of a number of different fuels with different values of octane number were performed. This paper presents an overview of the results from three different fuels used: EUROSUPER BS 95 (RON 95), EUROSUPER BS 98+ (RON 98) and EUROSUPER BS 100 (RON 100). Samples of fuel were collected from different service stations.
