Could Interactive Digital Materials Created by Teachers Decrease Mistrust towards Digital Information Sources among Students?

The aim of this study is to determine how students use a variety of information sources in learning in order to propose information sources that meet their needs. The information environment influences students’ information related behaviour. The comprehensive survey was administered to 253 undergraduate students in humanities at the large university in southern Croatia while the focus group involved 6 students. The following research questions were explored. What types of information sources students use in learning? Where students find information sources? Why students use particular sources? In what way they use it? In what activities the students need support? Based on collected answers we get insight into the learning process that consists of three stages – preparation for learning, learning, and repetition and practice. Each of these stages differs in accordance to the social interaction among students, as well as the format of information sources that students use. The study shows that students in humanities are predominantly using printed publications. Furthermore, the study results indicate students’ mistrust towards digital information sources due to the digital reading comprehension and unclear origin of information. Considering the results of this study, as well as the reviewed research on the use of literature in higher education, we proposed criteria that digital information sources should satisfy in order to meet the needs of students in humanities.
