Synthesis and structural characterization of vanadium(V) complex with 2-benzothiazolylhydrazone ligand

Vanadium complexes with 2-benzothiazolylhydrazones are promising area of research due to discoveries of several medicinal properties of vanadium(V) complexes with tridentate Schiff base ligands, such as: insulin-mimetic, antitumor and antibacterial activities [1-3]. Reaction of 2-hydrazinobenzothiazole and salicylaldehyde afforded tridentate Schiff base ligand (H2L). Reaction of [VO(acac)2] with H2L in ethanol solution and with the addition of Et3N produced Et3NH+[VO2L]– complex. Crystal and molecular structures of H2L and Et3NH+[VO2L]– were determined by X-ray diffraction on single crystals. Molecular structure analysis revealed that compound H2L exists in imino form. Resulting supramolecular motif in the crystal structure of H2L is infinite helical C(4) chain, shaped by N −H···N hydrogen bonds and supplemented by π∙∙∙π interactions. In complex compound vanadium is present in the anionic part of the compound, [VO2L]‒, in a distorted square pyramidal environment with one of the oxido oxygens at the apex. Anionic and cationic parts of the complex compound are connected via N‒H···O and C‒H···O hydrogen bonds, while anionic parts of the complex are mutually connected in crystal structure via C‒H···O and C‒H···N hydrogen bonds into endless chains that spread along c axis.
