Influence of Different Shade-Matching Devices on Natural Teeth Color Assessment

Aim and purpose: Electronic shade-selection devices improve the accuracy and reliability of dental shade selection because they are not influenced by significant visual selection parameters, such as illumination and operator variability. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the inter-device repeatability in natural teeth color measurement using two different shade-matching devices. Materials and method: Under standardized clinical conditions two devices (VITA Easyshade Advance 4.0 and SpectroShade-Micro) were used to record the color of 30 right upper central incisors in 30 participants. One observer, well trained in colour assessment and handling of the dental shade-matching devices, determined teeth color. CIE L*a*b* values were determined and ΔE between the measurements was calculated. Results: Paired samples t-test revealed statistically significant difference in all determined CIE Lab values between two shade-matching devices (p < 0.05). VITA Easyshade Advance 4.0 assessed higher L* and lower a* and b* values in comparison to SpectroShade-Micro. The mean color difference (dE) for all L*a*b* measurements between two devices was 9.02 (SD 2.04). Inter-device repeatability in CIE L*a*b* measurements for both shadematching devices was low (ICCL value = 0.44 ; ICCa value = 0.11 ; ICCb value = 0.77). Summary and conclusions: The results of this study revealed low inter-device repeatability probably due to the differences in device measuring techniques (spot and surface measurement) and teeth irradiation angle as well as reflection light receivement angle. Therefore, it can be concluded that two shade- matching devices are not comparable and the measured values cannot be exchanged between the dentists and dental technicians in everyday dental clinical practice
