Cationic nanosystems enhance melatonin ocular delivery: insights form a human corneal epithelial cell line model

Two types of nanosystems, namely lecithin/chitosan nanoparticles and Pluronic® F127/chitosan micelles have been prepared and evaluated regarding their potential for ocular delivery of melatonin, known to exert ocular hypotensive effect. The enhancing effect of F127 on melatonin permeation was shown to be hindered in the presence of chitosan. Lecithin/chitosan nanoparticles were characterised by prominent mucoadhesive properties and prolonged melatonin release that was shown to control melatonin permeation across in vitro corneal epithelial model.
