Stress-strain state at the vicinity of the crack tip in strength mis-match welded joint
The safe use of any welded structure is not only dependent on the fracture toughness of the joint, but also on the capacity of the material to yield and harden in the vicinity of a flaw. In welded joints defects are generally located in several microstructures which have different mechanical properties and strain hardening behaviours. Therefore, fracture behaviour is affected by the interaction of different microstructures at the crack tip. Even if each microstructure behaves independently in a ductile manner, a welded joint, and thus a whole welded structure, can fracture in a brittle manner due to the aforementioned interaction. The aim of this paper is to analyse the stress and strain state at the crack tip, as affected by heterogeneous microstructure and to evaluate the initiation of stable crack growth.
