Preliminary results of epizootiological research on poultry farms in Croatia using LAMP

Poultry infectious and parasitic diseases cause major problems and loss during production. Because of that it is of great importance to evaluate epizootiological situation on each poultry farm and to know how to adjust the immunoprotection strategy and improve immune response of poultry accordingly. A small project was initiated in order to evaluate the epizootiological situation on poultry farms in Croatia and inform farm holders. Cloacal and pharyngeal swabs were taken on 27 farms from live poultry, poultry, rodent and wild bird faeces samples, liver, spleen, lung, intestine and skin tissue samples from death animals, samples of red mite and samples of cloacal and pharyngeal swabs from wild birds, where appropriate. After RNA/DNA isolation, a cheap, simple and fast loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method of molecular detection was used with a set of 4 or 6 primers and Bst polymerase to detect specific microbial/parasitic RNA/DNA in 153 different samples in RealTime PCR. Final results are still pending, but preliminary results show the presence of common viral, bacterial and parasitic infections/invasions such as infectious bursal disease, Marek's disease, Newcastle disease, infectious bronchitis, coccidiosis, salmonella and campylobacter in different combinations on several farms in above mentioned samples.
