Splitski evangelijar / Evangeliarium Spalatense
The basic contents of the codex Evangaliarium Spalatense that we are now publishing are indicated by its very name. In other words, it contains the whole text of the four gospels of the Vulgate, and is thus an evangeliarum. The adjective »Split« (Spalatense) says that it is this, single, one and unique book. There is no other that is completely identical, although it might contain the same basic text. These are manuscript books that are unrepeatable. On the basis of the earliest codices, which included ES , the Vulgate now in use was founded. During the course of time, revisions of the Vulgate were made according to new understandings derived from the accessible codices, which means that the current Vulgate is not identical to a single one of its models or prototypes, but has been established on the foundation of all of them. Since every codex from these earliest times is unique, we determined to include in the critical apparatus all the kinds of variants between the text of the ES and the currently valid Vulgate. Even among editions of the Vulgate there are smallish differences but they do not affect the sense or contents. For this occasion we have used the Novum testamentum Graece et Latine, apparatu critico instructum edidit Augustinus Merk. S. J., editio undecima, Romae, sumptibus Pontificii instituti biblici, 1992.
