‘Where the summer tropic and arctic circle become one’: the fixed arctic circle in ancient Greek and mediaeval Welsh tradition
The appearance of a particular formulation used in a number of classical sources for describing meteorological conditions obtaining at the latitude of the fixed arctic circle, i.e. referring to die phenomenon of the midnight sun , in the Welsh poem Preiddeu Annwn, places the Welsh tradition within a much wider context of traditional observational meteorology. Furthermore, it is possible to follow the transmission of the concept recognised in classical authors through pertinent mediaeval works, without insisting on direct dependence of the poem’s author either upon the former or the latter.
