Photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange by sol-gel TiO2 films
The photocatalytic degradation of the synthetic textile dye Methyl Orange (MO, C.I. Acid Orange 52) using nanostructured sol-gel TiO2 films as photocatalyst was studied. Two nanostructured TiO2 films were prepared by sol-gel process and the dip-coating technique with and without addition of polyethylene glycol (PEG) in sol as a structure-directing agent. Influence of initial MO concentration in aqueous solution (0.0125 mmol L-1, 0.025 mmol L-1 and 0.05 mmol L-1) ; TiO2 films (with and without of addition PEG in sol) and sources of UV radiation (predominantly 254 (UV-C) and 365 nm (UV-A)) on decolorization efficiency was investigated. In the presence of TiO2 film UV-C radiation showed higher degradation efficiency for MO than UV-A radiation. Also, UV-C radiation without TiO2 photocatalyst was capable of degrading MO, while UV-A radiation alone did not show a potential for dyes degradation. Higher photoactivity showed TiO2 film with addition of PEG.
