Performance Evaluation of Vessel-Berth Link in Croatian Marinas through Capacity Optimization Process
Navigare necesse est – “to sail is necessary, ” the ancient seafarers’ saying claims. According to a recent study published as part of Croatia’s Tourism Institute TOMAS Nautika research project, half of all foreign boaters to have sailed Croatia’s Adriatic coast have done so on at least six separate occasions. The importance of logistics, due to these aspects and the fact that almost 400, 000 boaters each year pass through Croatian Adriatic sea, is growing and the logistics in marinas is strongly affected. This is one of the problems faced by planners and marina operators. Enterprises need to be careful in taking decision and simulation is one of the best ways for supporting companies in analyzing data and finding effective and innovative solutions to increase marinas capacity without occupying unnecesary sea area. The authors present a new approach based on modeling and simulation, in order to face marina logistics problems and to support decisions maker in evaluating different alternatives and strategies with particular attention to cost and capacity management in marinas. In this paper we consider the performance evaluation of vessel-berth link in marinas. The efficiency of operations and processes on the vessel-berth link has been analyzed through the basic operating parameters such as berth utilization, average number of vessels, vessel size, average total time that a vessel spends in the marina and berth pricing. All the main performances of the vessel-berth link are given. Numerical results and computational experiments are reported to evaluate the efficiency of the models for two marinas in the city of Novi Vinodolski. The research highlights benefits and advantages of the model use as support for decisions making in term of resources management, time and costs optimization and savings evaluation.
