Separation of sulphur from metallurgical coke by temperature treatment up to 2400 C
Sulphur content was analysed before and after thermal treatment of various coke samples at 1200, 1600, 2000 and 2400 C. The samples were heated at the rates of 10 and 30 C/min for two and four hours. The coke analysed were manufacture with the help of additives (light atmospheric residue from petroleum refining and coal tar pitch) and also without them. The separation following high temperature treatment was the most efficacious in the case of the coke produced from the coking coal and coal tar pitch as additive. After two hours of heating coke at 2400 C at the rate of 10 C/min, 58 % of total sulphur was separated. In the cokes that passed through the coking process only some of the sulphur compounds present in the coking coal were identified. After heating up to 1600 C all of the inorganic sulphur was separated from the cokes produced with the additives; the sulphur determined in the temperature range between 1600 and 2400 C was of organic origin.
