Croatian Translations of English Picturebook Classics
This thesis focuses on translations into Croatian of four picturebook classics originally published in English. It is considered whether the Croatian translators recognised and conveyed the multimodality of the following picturebooks: Pumpkin Soup (Helen Cooper, 1998), The Gruffalo (Julia Donalson & Alex Scheffler, 1999), Where the Wild Things Are (Maurice Sendak, 1963), and The Red Tree (Shaun Tan, 2001). In the first part of the theses, a general theoretical framework of translating picturebooks is given. The second part is focused on methodological issues, the analysis the analysis of the visual (pictures, the size and type of letters, etc.), the aural (the verbal text, the punctuation, the intonation pattern, etc.) and the cultural (domesticating, neutralising and foreignisation) elements of the Croatian translations of the abovementioned picturebooks. It is concluded that Croatian translators have successfully recognised and conveyed multimodality of the picturebook classics into Croatian.
