Storytelling
Storytelling is an event that involves either reading a written story aloud or telling a story orally. In both forms, storytelling involves a storyteller and an audience. Oral storytelling is an ancient event in which the storyteller and the audience cooperate to bring a story to life and it has been part of the world’s oral tradition for millennia. Consequently, the world abounds in folktales, which provide the best storytelling material. In the past, oral storytelling was highly appreciated until reading aloud became widespread due to the print media. Nowadays, storytelling is altogether seldom practised because of the prominence of digital technology. However, the benefits of listening to a story have lately bee more appreciated and the society now again welcomes both reading-aloud and oral-storytelling events. These practices are adopted in the EFL classroom, where they can be used for achieving various goals. Oral storytelling is used as a particularly helpful learning strategy because of its playful aspects and its efficacy. It is appropriate for English language learning because of the prominence of spoken language, which yields an authentic communicative situation. The use and benefits of oral storytelling, its tradition and its position today are in the focus of this thesis.
