Postmodern Picturebooks with Young Learners of EFL
This thesis focuses on the possibilities of using postmodern picturebooks to develop advanced reading skills in teaching English as a foreign language. It is divided into three parts. The first part defines picturebooks, their characteristics and the way in which the text and the illustrations work together in order to make one whole. The second part deals with postmodern picturebooks and their features. It defines their characteristics which make them suitable for developing reading skills in learning English as a foreign language. These include metafiction, intertextuality, intervisuality and interactivity. When these phenomena are presented through picturebooks, children easily understand them. The final part of the thesis considers how postmodern picturebooks can be used in the classroom and how children respond to them. An example of research into children interpreting postmodern features of picturebooks in their mother tongue is discussed, and several postmodern picturebooks are suggested for use in teaching English as a foreign language.
