Using Poetry in the Primary Classroom

This thesis concentrates on the possibilities of teaching English as a foreign language through the use of children’s poetry. It is divided into three parts. The first section defines children’s poetry and describes specific features of different forms of children’s poetry. This is accompanied by an overview of children’s poetry from the English speaking countries from the 19th century until today. The second section deals with using children’s poetry in the English foreign language classroom. Also, in this section the process of choosing poems and stages of teaching poetry are described. In the final section, different reasons for using children’s poetry from 1st to 8th grade in primary school are explored. Ten reasons that may attract teachers into using children’s poetry in their class are getting to know your pupils better, encouraging interaction amongst pupils, practicing pronunciation, learning vocabulary, learning grammar, developing language skills, raising cultural awareness, developing creativity, celebrating special occasions and for fun and pleasure. This last part also contains twenty materials for teaching poetry that are ready to use in the classroom.
