Music and Poems in English Language Learning and Teaching

This thesis focuses on two neglected ways of teaching English in the classroom ; using songs and using poetry in foreign language teaching and learning. First a short overview of song history is given, followed by reasons why to use songs, what exactly can be done with a song in class and how to choose an appropriate song. At the end of this part an account is given of some research on the benefits of songs in language teaching. The second part is about using poems in the classroom. This chapter starts with a short history of poetry, particularly children’s poetry. It continues with why to use poems in English language teaching, how to choose an appropriate poem and what cultural competences are developed by using poetry in class. There is also a short review of the Croatian national curriculum focusing on the inclusion of poetry in English as a school subject. The last part of this thesis brings some examples of how songs and poems can be used in the classroom, as well as ready-made activities and ideas for English classes.
